Scanner has power ( makes startup noises) but does not scan.
Device manager says device working properly and drivers up to date.
Have tried different usb ports and scanning programs.
Any ideas appreciated.

Are they Win 7 drivers or did you use other drivers?

Did you install the CanoScan Toolbox as well ? Just looked on Canons Site (http://support-nz.canon.co.nz/EN/search?v%3aproject=AAF-EN&binning-state=model%3d%3dCanoScan%20N670U%0Amenu%3d%3dDown load%0Aos%3d%3dWindows%20Vista&) - and they dont show drivers for W7. I have seen it before the scanners and some printers are to old to work on W7 even though it says the drivers have loaded OK.
You can also try it through a third Party program, that often does work - something like picasa (http://picasa.google.com/) - that has the option to import from a scanner.
IF that doesn't work You can always try it in XP mode, and see if it picks up the Scanner correctly. Thats what I had to do with a customers old scanner last year & use Picasa.
BUT since you only have home Pre, you will have to install a third party App to run XP mode From - VMLite (http://www.vmlite.com/index.php/products/vmlite-xp-mode/download) - Full instructions as to how to install and run XP Mode.

You dont Dual boot with XP mode, its a virtual Machine within Windows 7. The idea behind XP Mode is if some programs dont work in W7 they "should" in XP mode.
Its meant to be only for W7 pro and above, and some older CPU's can't handle visualization, but that program ( originally posted by Blam) allows it.
You can download XP mode from The Microsoft Site (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx) - when you select the System select professional, you download Windows XP mode 500MB, you dont need the other one. load in VMlite, then load in XP mode as per the instructions ( its easy).
Here are some screen shots of XP mode -- One is from my Windows 7 ultimate, Other from Windows 7 Home Pre using VMlite on an old P4 3.0 that cant handle virtual mode (normally) Correct XP Mode (http://www.imagef1.net.nz/files/XP_Mode_1.jpg) & home Pre (http://www.imagef1.net.nz/files/Home_Pre.PNG) & Shes a Real Grunt PC (http://www.imagef1.net.nz/files/Grunter.PNG)
Edited: you can take both out to full screen as if you are using XP, the screen shots are reduced to show W7 in the background.

Thanks understood will proceed
I have used xp drivers for my scanner on W7.
W7 will not accept xp drivers 'as is'.
Copy the driver folder & contents to a folder on our hard drive. Look for the 'inf' file in the folder which contains the driver.
Go to add scanner in control panel and install driver, when it asks you if you have a CD etc point it to the folder with the 'inf' file. It will probably install Ok.

You'll have to install something that supports scanning. Some graphics program like irfanview. Thats if the drivers installed both of the drivers

In W7 - try running the scanner in Compatibility mode - Select XP.
Last one I set up, it picked up the Scanner and printer in XP mode fine, they were an older Epson though.
Also have a read of This article (http://www.sevenforums.com/virtualization/34872-attaching-usb-devices-xp-mode.html) - Have not tried it so dont know if it works or not.

Oh Crap!! VMlite doesn't have the same functions to disable the integration mode.
Try this -- I dont have a scanner here to test, but it did work with Printer that wouldn't work before in XP mode (now does).
This is only a guess as I cant test it.
In Windows 7 - I assume it is showing the Scanner -- Right click it, and share the scanner (dont worry if you are not on a LAN - XP Mode is acting like a LAN - KIND of :illogical) Once shared, now go to XP Mode, start / Control Panel - Scanners and Cameras - Top left (you may want to select allow this computer to use a network scanner) - then Add an Imaging device - follow the wizard. Hopefully it will now allow your scanner to work -- Hands are a bit tied as I dont have other scanners here to test sorry..

sorry ... can't see where to share scanner. in control panel in 7 no options ?

The scanner will be under devices and printers, if it will share, it will be under properties / Sharing Tab.
Some devices are not able to be shared.
Just located This article, post #2 (http://www.sevenforums.com/drivers/47041-canoscan-n670u-no-driver.html) -- It may be of some help, may not. If it doesn't work, then I'm out of ideas until I can get hold of a scanner to try - god knows when that will be.
One of my own scanners the X500n networked printer/scanner on my color laser wont work in W7 - XP mode fine -- Its just wait till they make drivers.

Thanks no sharing tab ther.
I see other forums same prob too.
Scanner is 2002 born so might have to upgrade as the easiest fix.
Thanks for help.

If you decide to get another - get a MFC, all in one scanner/printer - they are not to badly priced these days and its one less Power point & Space required :)
