Connecting/disconnection ethernet cables

This is a really small question, but...

Could someone please advise me whether it is safe to connect and/or disconnect ethernet cables from components in a LAN without first shutting down the whole LAN?

Or even shutting down any individual components in a LAN to/from which cables are being connected or disconnected? Hope that makes sense!

Feel free to unplug those cables without shutting down - it causes no problem whatsoever.

Imagine that....no problems with a computer....

Wicked! I wasn't expecting that answer. Sounds like ethernet acts like USB in that sense - hot swapping is OK.
