No sound on Asus M2N-MX SE Dual core AMD

I have never been able to get the sound to work on the Asus M2N-MX SE motherboard running XP Pro Sp2.
Is activated in BIOS.
Downloaded latest drivers.

Does not show on device manager, and Windows does not find it.
If I try to install the driver (Realtek ALC662.5.1) the computer reboots and the driver remains uninstalled. On one occasion it trashed Windows.
Asus are not much help!

Did you install the mobo / chipset drivers FIRST?

Go to control panel / admin tools / event viewer. Whats it say under system or application about the time it reboots??

Look for any X's.

Does it reboot or bring up a BSOD?

The problem is that the computer does not detect a sound device to install a driver to. Have tried several drivers, all of them cause a reboot. Device manager shows:- Audio Codecs, Legacy Audio drivers, Legacy Video Capture Devices, Media devices, Unimodem half-Duplex Audio Device, 3 x Unknown devices.

Errors are:-

What do you think the Unknown devices are?

Or maybe a fax modem, if u have one installed

Can you post the whole log for those 2 errors?? Double click on them and click on the icon below the down arrow then right mouse / paste it here

So did u install the chipset driver first?

And are those the drivers (The link I gave) the drivers you downloaded, then installed?

Try this

i got M2N-MX-SE and had problems as well with sound...solution is

go into bios...go to advanced tab...chipset

For AZALIA Audio have it on auto

and for Front panel Select change it to AC97

What version of the BIOS is on it, according to the Asus site, 0403 fixes this

Fixed the issue that under certain condition some system may shut down automatically.

0406 is the latest version of the BIOS

Flashed the Bios etc, no change.
I think the answer is a USB external sound card, no conflicts and handy to use on other computers.

Speedy is right [as usual]. You need to get the CMOS settings, northbridge and southbridge, correct. There are choices and it is easy to make the wrong one..
You also need to have the motherboard drivers installed correctly.
Then it will all come right.
There is still blood on the floor from my attempts at finding the correct settings.
